Briar Cliff Men's Basketball: Ready to Rebound in 2025-26?
Last season, the Briar Cliff men's basketball team faced a tough reality, finishing with a 14-15 record. This marked their first losing season since the 2020-21 campaign, a stark contrast to their previous successes. But here's where the story gets interesting: the team is already looking ahead, aiming for a significant comeback in the 2025-26 season.
The team faces a challenge, having lost two of their top three scorers, including standouts like Matthew Stilwill, a two-time All-GPAC First Team selection, and Jamison Helmers. However, the roster isn't entirely depleted. Several experienced players are returning, ready to step up and lead the charge. Players like Blake Sindelar and Jaxson Wingert are expected to play pivotal roles.
Sindelar, the team's leading returning scorer, averaged an impressive 13.9 points per game, shooting at 47%. Wingert, entering his sophomore year, is poised for a breakout season after starting all 29 games last year, contributing 11.7 points and over 4 rebounds per game. He's definitely one to watch!
This year's squad is entering the season with a palpable sense of confidence. Head Coach Mark Svagera emphasizes the team's focus on achieving their goals. "We're focused on what's going to take us to where we want to be. We want to be competing at the top of the conference and we want to be in position to make the NAIA National Tournament," he stated. "So, we’re focused on our daily habits and what it’s going to take to get us there."
Wingert echoes the sentiment, highlighting the team's collective spirit. "A lot of guys are stepping up. We have some new transfers and even guys that aren’t going to play a lot this year are helping us in practice every day. They’re getting up ready and we feel we are ready too," he added.
